IFTA & OFF THE GRID | WHEN: Nov 30th, 12 to 2 pm | WHERE: 5th and Minna | Details: In 2004, multiple-award winning Guitarist Terrence Brewer started his own record label, Strong Brew Music, and to-date has produced six albums for that record label.  Brewer’ s last three albums (QuintEssential, Groovin Wes, and Setting The Standard: Vol 1) combined to spend nearly 100 weeks on the National JazzWeek Radio charts weekly top 50.  Those same three albums made their way into the top 15 on the national JazzWeek radio charts (QuintEssential peaked at #15, Groovin’ Wes peaked at #9, and Setting The Standard: Vol 1 peaked at #12) and Brewer has lead his groups in over 2000 shows in the last 7 years.

INTERSECTION & OFF THE GRID | WHEN: Oct 12th, 11 am to 2 pm | WHERE: 5t & Minna | DETAILS: The Nice Guy Trio creates a sound that is both intimate and reflective of their contrasting yet complimentary musical backgrounds, and always with an emphasis on spontaneity.  In concert they navigate through a uniquely diverse collection of original compositions and songs from folk traditions all around the globe, from jazz to klezmer to Balkan dance forms, to calypso and beyond. They have performed in venues, big and small, from Jazz at Chez Hanny and Café Royale, to The Great American Music Hall, and the Yerba Buena Garden Festival.

Off the Grid: Ben Goldberg Quartet

INTERSECTION & OFF THE GRID | WHEN: Oct 5, noon to 2 pm | WHERE: 5th and Minna St | DETAILS: Acclaimed clarinetist/composer Ben Goldberg grew up in Denver, CO, and received his undergraduate music degree from UC Santa Cruz and a Master of Arts in Composition from Mills College. He was a pupil of the eminent clarinetist Rosario Mazzeo, and studied with Steve Lacy and Joe Lovano. In addition to composing for and playing in the Ben Goldberg Quintet, he currently performs in the following groups: Tin Hat; plays monk, a trio with Scott Amendola and Devin Hoff; Myra Melford’s Be Bread; Nels Cline’s New Monastery; Go Home with Charlie Hunter, Ron Miles, and Scott Amendola.

Featuring Johnston on trumpet with David Phillips on pedal-steel guitar and Daniel Fabricant on bass, the moods they create range from melancholia to rollicking swing, as if the soundtrack to a deeply moving film that is yet to be made.

INTERSECTION FOR THE ARTS & OFF THE GRID | WHEN: September 21, noon–2 pm | WHERE: 5th & Minna St | DETAILS: Howard Wiley – saxophone; John Turk – keyboards; Ron Belcher – bass; Danny Spencer – drums Howard Wiley’s grandfather, Sam Wiley, played saxophone in Count Basie’s Orchestra, and gave constant advice to the young musician growing up in Hercules, CA. Wiley’s debut recording, The Businessman (Sax Records, 1995) was produced shortly after his 15th birthday by Steve Savage and Jim Nadel, founder of The Stanford Jazz Workshop. While still in high school, Wiley received the Thelonious Monk Scholarship, Downbeat Blues/Pop/Rock Instrumentalist award for best soloist, and the MVP Award for the Grammy All-American Jazz Band.
